Hibanobambusa tranquillans ‘Shiroshima’ is a small, compact bamboo with long variegated foliage that remains luminous throughout the year.

It is one of the most beautiful small bamboos with variegated foliage.

The leaves are long and spectacularly colored – light green, striped with a creamy white.

The foliage is highly persistent and remains vibrant even in cold, dry winters when the variegation becomes particularly striking.

In the spring, the leaves develop a beautiful pinkish edge.

The smooth, grooved canes are green, sometimes lightly streaked with creamy white. The sheaths covering the young canes are brown and will be shed over time.

    • If you mass plant Hibano bamboo, it will quickly creates dense screens/ an effective windbreak/obscure an unsightly view.
    • If you trim your bamboo twice a year, you can keep it down to a 50cm hedge.

Tips For Growing Bamboo

⊗  Bamboo is extremely invasive and powerful due to its rhizomatous root system – no tool but your sweat and tears will stop it. Maybe a tractor could help. ⊗

Rhizomes spread outward from the main rootstock, allowing it to quickly colonize large areas.

As a result, there must be a certain amount of forethought and preparation that goes into the installation of a ‘bamboo patch’ in your garden.

However, its spreading nature requires the installation of a rhizome barrier to prevent it from overtaking its surroundings.

The one that we use in the garden is this one and it seems to be holding down the fort: Rhizome Barrier

(As a side note, this bamboo looks just lovely in a great big ceramic pot from which it cannot escape. Also, plants in pots will remain smaller than those grown in open soil. But you may have to face a division of the bamboo every couple of years as its growth will slow)
