The Tales:
Verbena means ‘sacred bough’ in Latin, a reference to the leafy twigs of vervaine (Verbena officinalis) which were historically carried by priests, used in wreaths for druidic rituals, and for medicine.
The name “verbena” was given to the plant by Virgil and Pliny the Elder.
The common name, vervaine, comes from the Celtic name, ‘ferfain’, meaning to drive away (fer) a stone (faen) – a reference to practices that used vervaine to clear urinary stones through diuresis.
