Geum hybrid coccineum “Carlskaer” is a low-growing, clump-forming perennial that is loved for its easy maintenance and its yellow petals and orange-yellow stamens.

The bright orange flowers are often the first flowers of the season and bring a wonderful splash of color in spring.

The foliage is evergreen, mid-green in tone and lobed – creating interest and ground cover when the flowers have finished their display.

These plants fear neither sun nor shade, neither rocky soil nor competitors – they are low maintenance, easy to care for, deer, drought and frost resistant.

TIPS: Geums will remain evergreen through winter but the old leaves become brown and scruffy by the end of winter. Pulling off the old leaves or trimming the leaves down to the stems will allow for fresh new growth to come in spring.

The Tales

Geum comes from geuo (Greek), meaning ‘to give flavour or relish’.

Other members of this genus (Geum urbanum for instance) have been used since Roman times to flavour both food and drink.

Coccineum comes from coccineus (Latin) meaning ‘scarlet-coloured’ and refers to the colour of the flower (originally used to refer to the ‘cochineal’ beetle. which is used for its red dye).
