Geranium macchorhizum is a perennial geranium, known for its sprawling growth habit, magnificent pale pink flowers and its ability to thrive in difficult conditions.

The flowers are pale pink and cup-shaped, rising above round, fuzzy foliage that is aromatic to the touch.

The evergreen foliage will shift to a bronze-orange-red palette in the autumn, announcing the beginning of fall.

This geranium is particularly hardy, tolerant of drought and able to thrive in both sun and shade.

Its presence also limits the amount of weeds – so it’s a very handy variety to have in the garden!

TIPS: This one forms an excellent ground cover, even between tree roots.

A Note on the Difference between Geraniums and Pelargoniums

These are confused all the time. What you know to be Geraniums are probably Pelargoniums. And it has been a fascinating journey out of the darkness for me!

The physical distinction can be hard to spot as the details are in the number of petals.

Geraniums

  • Flowers have five similar petals
  • Considered perennials that come back year after year.
  • Bloom, Dormancy, Bloom, Dormancy > and Repeat.
  • To ease confusion, they are sometimes called ‘Hardy Geraniums’.

Pelargonium

  • Flowers have two upper petals which are different from the three lower petals
  • Annuals (can be semi hardy in some climates but in general are sold for one seasons use)
  • Bloom, The End.
  • To ease confusion, they are sometimes called ‘Tender Geraniums’.

The Tales:

The surface of the leaves is covered with glandular hairs rich in essential oils – this makes them feel slightly sticky to the touch.

If you rub a leaf between your fingers, a strong and acrid fragrance will be emitted – some say it is reminiscent of rhubarb but you’ll have to tell me what you think!
