Carex buchananii is a striking tufted perennial grass with an evergreen foliage of narrow, copper-bronze leaves.

The grass-like leaves are erect when young, and tend gradually to arch over time, bending gracefully towards the ground.
Because of its magnificent colors and airy mouvement, this Carex is particularly popular in drought-tolerant gardens as it brings both graphic and dynamic features.

GARDENING TIPS: Carex buchananii

    • She will look her very best out of the direct winds and scorching sun, allowing for her to show off her architectural form. Maybe in a flower bed among other flowers, peeking out of a rock garden or in a garden box if your window is in an alcove.
    • New growth happens every year so some of the older leaves will fade in color. Just pull them out gently and let the vibrant rust/copper/yellow/gold tones shine.
    • There is No need to prune! EVER
    • Looks beautiful with the other Carex members, Miscanthus purpureus, Festuca glauca

The Tales & The Botany: Carex buchananii

The most interesting thing about the Carex family is their ability to withstand both drought AND occasional flooding.

They are used in bio-swales in many urban areas for this very reason.

What is a bio-swale? I’m glad you asked!

Bio-swales are essentially intentional, planted ditches – like the space between the street and the sidewalk.

When there is too much rain, the sewer systems become overwhelmed by the runoff and the streets end up flooding.

By implementing bio-swales (and using plants such as the Carex family), some of the stormwater can be absorbed before the sewer systems are overwhelmed.

AND, the bio-swales can help pollutants from accumulating downstream by absorbing and filtering them “at the source.”
