Vinca major Variegata is a trailing vine with a magnificent color variegation, spreading along the ground to form dense masses of groundcover, come sun, come shade.

The light purple flowers give the plant her common name “Greater Periwinkle” – in fact this is where the name for the color comes from.

The foliage variegation moves from splashes of creamy white on green to full creamy-white leaves.

These plants fear neither sun nor shade, neither rocky soil nor competitors.

Vinca Variegata colonies will smother weeds with their density, whilst retaining their green and cream color all year round.

The Tales

The genus name probably derives from the Latin word vincire, meaning bind, as the long creeping vines were used to prepare garland and the vines do bind themselves to others in an unbreakable grasp.

It forms dense strands that envelop other plant life and can prevent saplings and shrubs from growing by blocking out the light. Periwinkle moves from place to place, with unintentional human help, in dumped garden waste or as plant fragments carried along in water
