Stachys byzantina

Colloquially known as “Lamb’s-ear” as the leaves are covered in silky-lanate, white-grey hairs – increasing its drought tolerance and ability to withstand the afternoon sun.

This gentle giant is colloquially known as “Lamb’s-ear” as the curved leaves are covered in silky-lanate, white-grey hairs. And they do really look like lamb’s ears.

Though there is nothing infantile about the Stachys byzantina – elegant and light grey all year round, they can bring a certain je-ne-sais-quoi to a particularly dark patch of a garden.

Both as a ground cover and, in the summer, as a stately flower.

Stachys byzantina flowers in late spring and early summer; plants produce tall spike-like stems with a few reduced leaves.
The flowers are small and light purple. The plants are mostly evergreen but can shrink back during cold winters and regenerate new growth from the crowns the following year.

The Tales:

In Brazil, the leaves can sometimes be found deep fried – like fish – and served with a slice of lemon as a snack – it sounds delicious!

These plants are often grown in children’s gardens as the soft leaves and generally gentle appearance lends itself to play and plant-learning.

There is a bee – Anthidium manicatum –  who likes to use the lamb’s wool to make its nest. And more bees = good. More happy bees = better.
