Satureja montana is known as a sweet smelling culinary herb around Europe, the Mediterannean and parts of Africa.
Its common name is Winter Savory or Mountain Savory (or Sariette des Montagnes).
As its name suggests, this species is a rock climbing, mountain climbing kind of plant.
The plant will go dormant in the winter but do not cut down the stems!
Fresh leaves will sprout from them the following spring.
Make sure the soil is well-draining and the sun shines as the roots do not handle humidity well.
The Tales:
There is evidence that it was used by the Greeks and Romans over 2000 years ago.
It was said then that summer savory (the sister) was an aphrodisic, and that mountain savory was an anaphorisiac.
You can guess which one was more popular in the day…
The Medicine:
The essential oil of this plant is one of the most powerful used in aromatherapy today. It needs to be used under the supervision of a professional as the risks can be great.
