Koeleria glauca ‘Blue Sprite’ is a drought tolerant, low growing grass that grows easily in average and well-drained soil in full sun, and performs best in lean soils.

The leaves are thin, bluish green blades, arching elegantly.

The flowers grow up to a foot above the foliage mounds; they preserve well and can be used in dried arrangements if trimmed back in fall or winter. They grow densely, forming little tufts that are both drought tolerant and hardy.

It is one of the few low-growing ornamental grasses, making it an attractive option for accents, borders, and mass planting.

👨‍🌾GARDENING TIPS👨‍🌾:

    • Avoid planting in rich, fertile soil, clay soil, wet soil, or shade
    • Prune in late winter down to make room for new spring growth.
    • 🌳Dividing the tuft every 2-3 years will keep it perky and extra blue > best to divide in the spring or in the fall
    • This grass will tolerate the exposed condition of a rock garden.

The Tale:

The genus name honors the German botanist and grass expert Georg Ludwig Koeler (1765-1807).

“Glauca”, as always, means white/blue – it is also the root of the word glaucoma. But we don’t want anything to do with that!
