Glechoma hederacea ‘Variegata’, commonly known as variegated ground ivy or creeping Charlie, is a striking ground cover known for its unusually variegated foliage.
The leaves are typically green with creamy white or pale yellow margins, adding visual interest to the ground cover.
A solid ground cover, evergreen and sweet smelling, she is only about 15cm tall but one plant is capable of covering around 2m² with time.
In the spring time, little blue flowers pop up and attract all the bees.
The Tale:
European settlers transported Glechoma hederacae everywhere, as an edible and medicinal plant. It is in fact rich in essential oils, vitamin C, provitamin A, zinc, iron, silicon, molybdenum, and calcium.
However, its rapid growth rate and its rhizomatous root systems meant that it quickly colonized the areas it was was introduced to.
It is still considered invasive in several states in the United States.
Its powers comes from its ability to tolerate both drought and shade – it is one of the few plants that can thrive in the light and in the darkness.
