Geranium x cantabrigiense ‘Biokovo’ is a perennial creeping geranium, slowly forming an evergreen carpet composed of rounded, aromatic leaves that take on a beautiful red hue in autumn.
Small white flowers with bright pink stamens appear over the course of the summer, dazzling against the dark foliage.
The aromatic, rounded, palmate, and dissected foliage remains evergreen, with a bright green hue in season, turning reddish in autumn and winter.
Its sprawling habit allows it to form semi-bushy mats.
TIPS: This variety is Ideal for natural gardens or city balconies as ‘Biokovo’ is not afraid of harsh winter cold and tolerates the summer heat.
A Note on the Difference between Geraniums and Pelargoniums
These are confused all the time. What you know to be Geraniums are probably Pelargoniums. And it has been a fascinating journey out of the darkness for me!
The physical distinction can be hard to spot as the details are in the number of petals.
Geraniums
- Flowers have five similar petals
- Considered perennials that come back year after year.
- Bloom, Dormancy, Bloom, Dormancy > and Repeat.
- To ease confusion, they are sometimes called ‘Hardy Geraniums’.
Pelargonium
- Flowers have two upper petals which are different from the three lower petals
- Annuals (can be semi hardy in some climates but in general are sold for one seasons use)
- Bloom, The End.
- To ease confusion, they are sometimes called ‘Tender Geraniums’.
The Tales:
This variety is a spontaneous cultivar of the natural hybrid Geranium x cantabrigiense, derived from
- Geranium dalmaticum from the Balkan coast
- Geranium macrorrhizum from the southern coast
This makes this cultivar … very hardy and very drought tolerant.
