Gallium odoratum is a perennial ground cover with lanceolate leaves arranged in whorls that, if you squint, resemble a forest of little palm trees as seen from on high.
The leaves are fragrant, changing shades of green with age. They will die back in the winter and return with renewed energy the following spring.
The flowers are small, white, star-shaped flowers in the spring, adding delicate beauty to the garden.

- Sweet woodruff thrives in shaded or partially shaded areas and while it does become more resilient when it is established, it is not the *most* drought-resistant, preferring a rich and moist soil to really thrive.
It’s just such a magical plant, I couldn’t resist bringing it into our collection!
The Tales:
As the epithet odoratum suggests, the plant has a strong fragrance – the sweet scent is called coumarin.
Coumarin is a naturally occurring sweet-smelling compound found in many plants, including cinnamon, tonka beans, and sweet clover.
It sort of smells like freshly cut hay, vanilla, softness and joy.
This scent increases on wilting and then persists on drying, and the dried plant is used in potpourri and as a moth deterrent. So you can always find a use for your Gallium odoratum!
